# Drive-In Rack Systems in Kansas City

Kansas City warehouses near the I-35, I-70, and I-435 freight corridors need storage that matches the way orders leave the building. Drive-in rack removes aisles from the equation entirely. The forklift drives inside the structure and sets pallets on continuous rails, which packs more positions into a given footprint than single-deep selective rows in a suitable bulk layout. The cost is access: only the pallets at the open end of the lane are reachable until you work through the ones in front. Before adding another row, compare what remains accessible, how inventory rotates, and where incoming freight waits. A free warehouse needs analysis starts with your floor plan and storage profile so the next investment solves the handling problem rather than just filling another corner with steel.

That makes it the right call for large volumes of a small number of SKUs - bulk buffer stock, seasonal inventory, freezer product - and the wrong call the moment SKU variety climbs. Drive-in loads and unloads from one end for LIFO; drive-through is open at both ends for FIFO, at the cost of a few positions and a second access aisle.

We lay out drive-in around your specific lift truck's dimensions and your SKU depth, then put the position count next to a selective plan of the same footprint so the density gain is a number, not a sales claim.

## Why Kansas City Operations Work With Us

The West Bottoms, Executive Park, and Northland represent different warehouse settings within the same freight market. An older building's column grid should not be treated like the open floor of a newer distribution facility. Receiving from I-70 and I-435 also needs staging space that is not counted as permanent storage. We keep those constraints separate when comparing a bulk reserve block with working pick aisles.

We compare the number of pallets per item with lane depth and confirm the exact forklift envelope. Bulk density should not come at the expense of the active pick area. Drive-in uses one-end access and last-in, first-out handling; drive-through needs access at both ends and an agreed lane sequence. Guarding and lane entry clearance belong in the initial scope. The local plan also accounts for access along the I-435, I-70, and I-35 freight corridors, delivery space, and the difference between a receiving window and a storage window. We ask your team to confirm those constraints from the building information and daily schedule.

As a division of Warehouse Equipment & Supplies Co., we put the layout, material list, and installation scope in front of you together. You get a free design consultation, an itemized quote, and installation teams we manage, with one contact for revisions, scheduling, and replacement parts. We explain the tradeoffs before the purchase and keep the approved configuration available for later changes.

## How Drive-In Rack Works

1

### Continuous rails, not beams

Pallets rest on rails carried by upright frames rather than individual beam levels, so a lane accepts pallet after pallet at the same elevation.

2

### The truck enters the lane

The driver travels inside the bay to place or retrieve each load. Lane width, rail height, and mast clearance get dimensioned to that specific truck, not a generic one.

3

### One open end or two

One open end gives LIFO and deep bulk storage. Two open ends give FIFO with slightly fewer positions, since each lane now needs clearance from both sides.

4

### Guarding built into the design

Guide rails, column guards, and rail-end protection are part of the spec from the start, to help prevent forklift contact with the rack structure.

## Where It Fits Best

High volume of a small number of SKUs

Seasonal or buffer inventory held in bulk

Cold storage and freezer rooms where cube matters most

Product too fragile to floor-stack more than two high

Buildings where floor space, not height, is the binding constraint

## What We Need to Design It

- What forklift will enter the lanes, and what are its exact dimensions?
- How many pallets do you hold per SKU?
- Do you need LIFO, or does the product require drive-through FIFO?
- What's the clear height and floor condition in the storage area?
- How many total pallet positions are you trying to reach?

## What a Project Includes

The design starts with the forklift, not the rack. Mast height, overall width, load backrest, and turning clearance decide lane dimensions, so truck specifications get collected before anything is drawn.

Next we look at SKU depth. Drive-in rewards deep lanes of a single product and punishes variety - if a lane never fills, you've built an expensive way to store less than you could have with selective. Where the inventory profile is mixed, we'll usually recommend a hybrid: selective at the pick face, drive-in behind it for reserve.

The quote itemizes frames, rails, rail supports, guide rails, and column protection, with a CAD drawing showing lane depth, rail elevations, and total positions. Installation partners anchor, plumb, and align every rail run, then verify a loaded pallet travels the full lane before handing the system over.

The approved layout includes lane-entry protection and handling clearances. Keep the configuration and load ratings available for future additions or layout changes.

Before delivery is committed, we review the receiving window, unloading responsibilities, and available staging area with your team. The approved layout and component list are used to agree the installation sequence; a phased approach is assessed against your shipping schedule rather than promised automatically. Any changes to pallet weights, handling equipment, or inventory mix are reviewed before loading the completed system. Keep the configuration and capacity information with the operating team so later beam moves or added levels are checked against the rated arrangement.
